120 Containers of Malaria and TB Medications Donated to Ghana Left to Spoil

More than 120 containers of free Malaria and Tuberculosis medications donated by the Global Fund to Ghana have been left to spoil at the Tema Port for several months. While the initial number of containers was higher, the government only managed to pay for and clear the medications covering HIV/AIDS, leaving the essential Malaria and TB drugs to deteriorate.
In April, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) facilitated the clearance of 14 out of the 182 containers of medical supplies from the Global Fund that were held at the ports.
These medications were generously donated to assist Ghana in combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. The health commodities included antiretroviral medications for HIV patients, rapid diagnostic tests for malaria and TB, Malaria TB injections, antiretroviral medicine, and mosquito nets, all delivered to Ghana at no cost.
The shipments have been detained and left to decay at the Tema port due to the non-payment of third-party fees.
Two months ago, the government established a committee to address the delays in clearing the goods. This committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ministry of Health.
