Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is moving toward energy sustainability as it considers solar power for its critical care units—a plan receiving fresh momentum with support from the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Hon. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije.

During a working visit to the hospital, Hon. Vanderpuije, accompanied by a team of engineers, reaffirmed his commitment to help reduce the facility’s dependence on the national power grid. The visit follows a promise he made while chairing the hospital’s 2024 Annual Performance Review.

Hospital officials shared updates on their ongoing green energy efforts with the MP’s delegation. Acting CEO, Dr Frank Owusu-Sekyere, revealed that a pilot solar installation at the Accident and Emergency Department is about 70% complete. Plans are underway to extend solar power to other essential areas, including the operating theatres and intensive care unit, where uninterrupted power is vital.

“We are currently conducting feasibility studies to determine how best to scale up,” Dr Owusu-Sekyere said, highlighting the hospital’s long-term goal of energy self-sufficiency.

Engineer Kenneth Arthur, speaking for the technical team, noted the support of the Ministries of Energy and Health and stressed the importance of using high-efficiency systems customized to the hospital’s needs. He said a technical committee will be formed to guide the project, with planning, design, and budgeting expected to conclude before the hospital’s next annual review.

Senior hospital officials present included Mr Gideon Gawuga, Acting Director of Finance; Mr Frederick Addo-Yobo, Director of General Services; Mr Munir Alhassan, Director of Administration; Dr Harry Akoto, Acting Director of Medical Affairs; Mr Yahuza Jawula, Director of Human Resources; and Mr Mustapha Salifu, Head of Public Relations.
