Upper East Region, Ghana – The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has concluded a working visit to the Upper East Region, with a strong focus on meningitis preparedness and health system strengthening.
During his engagement with staff from the Upper East Regional Health Directorate, Prof. Kaba received an update on the region’s meningitis response. Prof. Kaba emphasized the importance of readiness in managing such outbreaks and donated essential medications to support the free treatment of confirmed cases. He also underscored the need for robust logistics and case management systems.
In addition to outbreak preparedness, discussions centered on improving staff welfare and strategies to attract and retain healthcare personnel to enhance service delivery in the region.
As part of his visit, Prof. Kaba also handed over a state-of-the-art phototherapy machine to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Upper East Regional Hospital. The equipment, donated by the Hungarian Ambassador, is already in use and has reportedly saved the lives of three neonates suffering from jaundice. Hospital management expressed gratitude for the timely intervention and Prof. Kaba’s ongoing support.

Prof. Kaba concluded his visit at the Navrongo Health Research Centre, where he encouraged researchers to focus on practical, impact-driven studies that address existing gaps in health service delivery. He emphasized the importance of evidence-based research in shaping national health policies.
The visit highlighted Prof. Kaba’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems, especially in underserved regions, through strategic support, innovation, and collaboration.
