Finance Minister Affirms Health as Cornerstone of National Prosperity
During his address at the 2024 Health Sector Annual Summit, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Adam reaffirmed the government's commitment to fostering a healthy society as a linchpin for national advancement. Speaking at the Kempinski Hotel on May 15, 2024, Dr. Adam emphasized the intrinsic connection between health and economic growth, asserting that a healthy populace catalyzes productivity, which in turn fuels economic prosperity.
Under the theme "Quality Healthcare Delivery: A Catalyst for Achieving Universal Health Coverage," the summit underscored the government's dedication to enhancing healthcare accessibility and outcomes. Dr. Adam announced secured funds for vital health projects such as the La Polyclinic and upgrades at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, showcasing ongoing investment in the sector.
Highlighting Ghana's comparative health expenditure per capita of $75, exceeding the $39 average in low-income countries, Dr. Adam assured continued government support despite prevailing challenges. He projected a robust economic recovery, anticipating a growth rate of 1.5%.
Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, the president's representative on health, lauded advancements in healthcare access, notably through the Network of Practice (NoP) strategy aimed at fortifying primary healthcare systems. He acknowledged international partners for their contributions to maternal health, vaccines, adolescent health, and family planning services.
Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, advocated for robust public-private partnerships to bolster the health system's resilience, emphasizing collaboration as indispensable for effective healthcare provision.
The summit serves as a vital mechanism for monitoring and evaluating sector performance annually. With a focus on the mid-term review of the Health Sector Medium-Term Development Plan (HSMTDP), stakeholders are poised to discuss findings and propose solutions to address sector challenges, aiming to fortify Ghana's health system in alignment with the Universal Healthcare Coverage Roadmap (2020-2030).
