Ghana today joined the global community in marking the International Day of the Midwife with a national celebration held in Takoradi. The event culminated in a prestigious awards ceremony honoring exceptional midwives from across the country for their outstanding service and contributions to maternal and child health.

The ceremony recognized the critical role midwives play in ensuring safe pregnancies, childbirth, and postnatal care, especially within communities facing significant healthcare challenges.

Speaking on behalf of the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Deputy Director-General Dr. Caroline Reindorf Amissah delivered the keynote address. She commended midwives for their unwavering dedication and affirmed their importance in safeguarding the health and lives of women and children.

“As we recognize their invaluable contributions, it’s essential to prioritize their support, safety, and well-being," she said. "This includes access to mental health resources, promoting self-care, and ensuring a supportive work environment that reflects their essential role.”

Dr. Amissah also reaffirmed the Ghana Health Service’s commitment to advancing the welfare of midwives nationwide.

The International Day of the Midwife, celebrated every year on May 5th, highlights the vital contributions of midwives around the world. This year’s theme, “Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis,” underscores their indispensable role during emergencies and health crises.
