Ghana Commemorated 2024 World Malaria Day with Pledge to Eliminate Disease
Ghana marked the 2024 World Malaria Day with a solemn commitment to eradicate malaria from its borders. Under the theme ‘Health Equity: Cornerstone for Malaria Elimination in Ghana,’ stakeholders in the health sector reiterated their dedication to this cause during the ceremony.
Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Health Service, affirmed the nation’s progress towards malaria elimination. This milestone coincided with the launch of a comprehensive national malaria elimination strategy spanning 2024-2028. The strategy outlines multifaceted approaches, including mass drug administration and preventive treatments, underscoring the collaborative effort required to achieve this ambitious goal.
Alhaji Hafiz Adam, Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, outlined key priorities of Ghana’s malaria elimination roadmap, emphasizing the importance of surveillance, vector control, and community engagement. He hailed Ghana’s strides since the last World Malaria Day, symbolized by the unveiling of the National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan 2024-2028, a testament to unwavering commitment.
Dr. Nana Yaw Peprah, Deputy Program Manager for the National Malaria Elimination Program, disclosed targets set in the National Malaria Plan 2021-2025, aiming for significant reductions in mortality and case incidence by 2025. He highlighted ongoing interventions, including net distribution and indoor spraying, despite challenges like resource constraints.
As the world commemorates World Malaria Day on April 25th annually, Ghana reaffirms its resolve to overcome the challenges posed by malaria and advance towards a malaria-free future.”
