Ghana Health Service Marks International Day to End Obstetric Fistula with Call for Action and Awareness

Today, the Ghana Health Service joins the global community in commemorating the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring safe childbirth and restoring dignity to women affected by this preventable condition.
Obstetric fistula, a serious childbirth injury resulting from prolonged, obstructed labour without timely medical intervention, continues to impact thousands of women worldwide—many of whom suffer in silence. Despite being both preventable and treatable, it remains a pressing public health issue, particularly in low-resource settings.
In marking this important day, the Ghana Health Service is calling for greater public awareness, improved access to quality maternal healthcare, and stronger support systems for women living with fistula.
“Every woman deserves a safe childbirth experience and the chance to live with dignity,” said a GHS spokesperson. “It’s time to break the silence, raise awareness, and restore hope to affected women. Together, we can build a future free from obstetric fistula.”
The Service urges stakeholders at all levels to invest in maternal health and take action to eliminate obstetric fistula as part of Ghana’s broader commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage and improving women’s health outcomes.
