Ghana Health Service to Improve Healthcare Access for Persons with Disabilities

In February 2025, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) outlined measures to improve healthcare access for persons with disabilities. Plans include the introduction of disability-friendly health facilities, employment opportunities, and better access to assistive services. Additionally, the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) announced a $4 million project aimed at improving rehabilitation services, renovating health facilities, and enhancing disability data management for children in selected regions of Ghana .
The GHS has designated officers at various regional and district hospitals to assist persons with disabilities who seek care in health facilities. These health officers will assist patients from the outpatient department through consultation, pharmacy, and accounts, helping them avoid long queues until they leave the facility. Some officers may understand sign language to assist persons with hearing impairments .
Representatives of the National Disability Federation welcomed these interventions but highlighted persistent accessibility challenges in healthcare facilities. They called for Braille labeling on medications, structured career paths for sign language interpreters, and free primary healthcare for persons with disabilities
A follow-up meeting has been scheduled to advance these discussions and explore further steps to improve healthcare accessibility for persons with disabilities
