The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is calling on contractors involved in road construction projects to prioritize regular watering of roads to mitigate the effects of dust during the harmattan season.

In a press release signed by Dr. Frank Serebour, President of the Association, it was highlighted that the prevailing dry weather conditions are exacerbating respiratory issues, particularly among individuals with asthma and other chronic respiratory ailments, who may experience acute attacks if dust levels are not controlled.

The GMA cautioned drivers to avoid speeding, especially on dusty roads and during nighttime, due to reduced visibility caused by dust particles.

Moreover, the association emphasized the importance of wearing face masks to shield against dust inhalation, particularly when outdoors.

In addition to these measures, the public is advised to limit outdoor activities, especially for children, and maintain hydration by consuming ample water throughout the day.

Asthmatic patients are urged to carry their inhalers at all times and adhere strictly to prescribed medications.

Furthermore, the GMA discouraged activities such as burning bushes that could exacerbate dust levels and contribute to bushfires.

Individuals experiencing symptoms of respiratory conditions, including cough, runny nose, painful swallowing, chest discomfort, or difficulty breathing, are encouraged to seek medical attention promptly at the nearest health facility.

The GMA’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to safeguarding public health during the challenging harmattan season.
