Ghana Reports 50 Suspected Cholera Cases This Year
Ghana has reported 50 suspected cholera cases this year. Despite all cases testing negative, Dr. Dennis Laryea, Deputy Director of Public Health in charge of Surveillance at the Ghana Health Service, is urging the public to maintain personal hygiene to prevent infections.
This appeal comes in the wake of rising cholera cases in neighboring Nigeria, where over 800 suspected cases and 16 deaths have been reported across 30 of the 36 states as of June.
Dr. Laryea emphasized that surveillance within Ghana is heightened to detect any cross-border infections that may arise before a patient falls ill within the country. He stressed that the focus is not only on the number of cases but also on the management of reported cases.
The last cholera outbreak in Ghana occurred in 2019.
