Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has announced plans for a new phase of the national COVID-19 immunization campaign, scheduled to run from Saturday, May 4 to May 10 this year.

The upcoming campaign aims to facilitate widespread vaccination among eligible individuals, providing convenient access to vaccination services and bolstering efforts to prevent potential surges of the virus.

As of March 2024, Ghana has administered COVID-19 vaccines to over 14.9 million people, representing 45% of the population, with 11.8 million individuals fully vaccinated and 6.9 million receiving booster shots. With over 8 million doses of vaccines available, the GHS emphasizes the importance of vaccination to safeguard public health.

Naziru Tanko Mohammed, Deputy Programme Manager of the Expanded Programme on Immunization, stressed the necessity for all eligible individuals to receive vaccinations to establish immunity against COVID-19. He highlighted the need for booster shots to maintain immunity, recommending annual boosters for the general population and more frequent boosts for high-risk groups.

Mohammed outlined plans for routine vaccination programs, enabling individuals to access vaccines at health centers with ease. He reassured the public of the safety of COVID-19 vaccines and encouraged active participation in the upcoming immunization campaign starting on May 4.

The GHS remains committed to promoting vaccination uptake and ensuring the health and well-being of the Ghanaian population.
