GNAT Unveils Cancer Foundation to Support Teachers
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the country's largest teachers' union, has launched the GNAT Cancer Foundation (GCF). This initiative aims to deliver top-tier cancer treatment for teachers and their families, as well as raise cancer awareness and manage funds for cancer care effectively.
"With the GNAT Cancer Foundation, we now have a dedicated entity to manage our cancer fund efficiently," said Mr. Kwame Dagbandow, Deputy General Secretary of GNAT, during a press conference at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC) in Accra. "The foundation will oversee the partnership between the GNAT Teachers' Fund and SGMC, supporting preventive education, treatment, and management of cancer cases among GNAT members and their families."
Mr. Dagbandow highlighted GNAT's commitment to the health and well-being of over 260,000 educators. "Teachers play a critical role in Ghana's education system, and their health is vital," he stated. "Enhancing teacher productivity involves addressing their health concerns seriously."
The establishment of the GNAT Cancer Foundation follows GNAT's acquisition of the SGMC. "These initiatives aim to ease the burden on our members," explained Mr. Dagbandow. "Many teachers have had to seek costly cancer treatment abroad. Now, they can receive world-class care here in Ghana."
He also stressed the need for collaborative efforts in combating cancer. "The government cannot fight this battle alone. GNAT and its members are dedicated to aiding the nation in this fight."
Thomas Armstrong Asante, Chair of the Foundation's Board, outlined the GCF's vision for "sustainable and stress-free cancer management for GNAT members and their families." He added, "The GCF is committed to leading a sustainable fight against cancer in Ghana. Cancer treatment is financially draining, and the costs continue to rise."
Mr. Asante described cancer as the most pressing health issue facing teachers and urged the public to donate at least GHS5 to support the foundation's fundraising efforts. To ensure sustainability, the foundation will focus on three key areas: increasing cancer prevention awareness and education, facilitating world-class treatment and management of cancer cases, and prioritizing responsible resource management.
The GNAT Cancer Foundation plans to hold fundraising campaigns to seek support from corporations, religious bodies, and individual philanthropists dedicated to fighting cancer in Ghana.
Dr. Clement Edusa, CEO of the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, addressed the rising burden of cancer cases and treatment costs in Ghana. He emphasized the role of SGMC's world-class facilities in combating cancer and called on local and international organizations and individuals to support the GNAT Cancer Foundation and the Cancer Centre in their efforts.
