KBTH Launches Employee Assistance Program to Enhance Staff Well-Being
Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has introduced an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) aimed at promoting the well-being of its employees. This initiative underscores the hospital's dedication to supporting its staff, acknowledging the unique pressures faced by healthcare professionals.
The EAP, which serves over 8,000 hospital staff members, offers a comprehensive range of services, including psychosocial support, professional and financial counseling, legal assistance, and overall emotional and well-being support. The program is accessible 24/7 to ensure that staff can receive help whenever necessary.
During the program's launch on July 24, 2024, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, Chief Executive of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, emphasized the motivation behind the initiative. He pointed out the significant stress experienced by healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Just a few years ago, our staff were at the forefront of the COVID fight without vaccines, facing substantial risks. Many of our team members contracted the virus, and we lacked adequate mechanisms to address their needs. This EAP represents Korle-Bu’s renewed commitment to its staff, especially as we celebrate our 100th anniversary," Dr. Ampomah said.
He highlighted the critical role of mental well-being in healthcare, noting that it directly impacts productivity and the quality of patient care. "The mental well-being of our staff is essential. Many face substantial challenges both personally and professionally, and this program is designed to offer the necessary support," he added. Dr. Ampomah also stressed the program's commitment to confidentiality.
The successful implementation of the EAP has been supported by a partnership with BEL-AQUA Mineral Water, which has played a crucial role in ensuring the program's success.
