Korle Bu Accident and Emergency Department Celebrates Emergency Medicine Day 2025

The Accident and Emergency Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) joined the global observance of Emergency Medicine Day 2025 with a series of impactful activities aimed at honoring emergency healthcare professionals and promoting community awareness.
In collaboration with the Emergency Medicine Society of Ghana, this year’s celebration was held under the theme: “Proud to Provide Your Emergency Care.” The event highlighted the dedication, resilience, and essential role of emergency medicine teams in delivering lifesaving care.
To mark the occasion, emergency medicine specialists from KBTH engaged the media to discuss the challenges and advancements in the field, while advocating for increased government support in equipping emergency units with the necessary tools and infrastructure.
A health walk through the hospital and surrounding communities was organized to raise public awareness of the critical role emergency medicine plays in healthcare. Staff and participants also engaged in aerobics sessions to emphasize the importance of physical fitness for emergency care providers.
The department hosted a blood donation drive, encouraging staff to contribute to emergency preparedness by donating blood – a vital resource during critical incidents. A free health screening was also conducted for hospital staff and relatives of patients, including BMI checks, blood pressure assessments, hepatitis B and C tests, and BUECR evaluations.
Adding a lively touch to the celebration, a food bazaar offered healthy meals to staff at discounted prices. The Physiotherapy Department provided relaxing massages at special rates, reinforcing the event’s focus on staff wellness.
To strengthen clinical capacity, Basic Life Support (BLS) training was organized for staff, alongside an educational session on the prevention and management of needle and sharps injuries in emergency settings.
In a compassionate gesture, wellness packages were distributed to all patients in admission and triage, underscoring the Department’s ongoing commitment to patient-centered care and holistic wellbeing.
The celebration at Korle Bu not only honored the work of emergency healthcare professionals but also reaffirmed the department’s mission to advance emergency care delivery in Ghana.
