Newman Highlights the Importance of Inclusive Policies and Comprehensive Support Systems on World Autism Awareness Day

Dakoa Newman, Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South Constituency and Minister-designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, advocates for heightened attention and support for individuals on the autism spectrum in Ghana. In a statement issued to mark World Autism Awareness Day, Newman underscores the necessity of addressing the challenges faced by those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) across various facets of life, including education, employment, and social integration.

Recognizing the unique contributions of individuals on the spectrum to society, Newman emphasizes the importance of inclusive policies and comprehensive support systems to promote their well-being and empowerment. Drawing attention to global data indicating a rise in ASD cases, Newman stresses the urgency of addressing this issue, despite challenges in estimating prevalence in Ghana due to limited data availability.

Newman outlines key areas for focus, including the development of inclusive policies, financial support for interventions, community awareness, and social support initiatives. She calls for collaborative efforts among government agencies, healthcare providers, educators, and community leaders to foster a more inclusive society.

Aligned with this year’s theme, “Moving from Surviving to Thriving,” Newman urges concentrated efforts in providing comprehensive support to individuals on the spectrum, encompassing policy development, financial assistance, community engagement, and the establishment of support networks for parents and caregivers.

Newman concludes by calling on stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to creating a society that embraces neurodiversity and ensures equal opportunities for all individuals to thrive and contribute to the nation’s progress.

As Ghana joins the global community in observing World Autism Awareness Day, Newman’s advocacy for inclusive policies and support systems reflects a growing recognition of the importance of addressing the needs of individuals on the autism spectrum and fostering their full participation in society.
