Thara Brigitte Mills Advocates for Supportive Therapies and Understanding for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Thara Brigitte Mills, the founder of Mulan Neurodiversity School, sheds light on the experiences of minimally verbal children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), noting that approximately 30% of them speak fewer than 30 words or do not speak at all. Speaking on World Autism Day, Mills emphasizes the need to recognize the positive qualities possessed by individuals on the autism spectrum, such as focus, hard work, honesty, enthusiasm, politeness, respectfulness, kindness, and caring nature.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by autistic children, including epilepsy, unusual eating and sleeping habits, and gastrointestinal issues, Mills underscores the importance of providing supportive therapies such as play therapy, speech therapy, applied behavior analysis, floor time, relationship development intervention, and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for Aggressive Behaviors.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by communication difficulties, social interaction challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. While the cause remains unknown, scientists believe it involves a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Early detection of autism signs, which may include delays in language, movement, or cognitive skills, as well as hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness, is crucial for early intervention.

Despite the severity of some cases, many children with autism can lead fulfilling lives. Mills encourages parents and caregivers to be proactive in seeking support and understanding for individuals with autism, fostering an inclusive environment that promotes their overall well-being and development.
