NHIA and NIA Collaborate to Register Children Under 15 Years
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) of Ghana have joined forces in a significant initiative to advance healthcare coverage and national identification for the country's youth. This collaborative effort aims to register children aged 6 to 14 years nationwide, beginning on June 10, 2024.
The goal of this targeted registration drive is to issue Ghana cards to young individuals. These cards will not only grant access to healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) but also serve as official identification provided by the NIA.
By providing Ghana cards at an early age, the NHIA and NIA seek to improve access to essential healthcare services for children and facilitate their participation in various socio-economic activities that require official identification. This initiative underscores Ghana's commitment to streamlining administrative processes and expanding the reach of social services.
During a training session in Winneba for NHIA staff from the middle and northern belts, representatives from both authorities emphasized the importance of universal healthcare coverage and ensuring every child's access to fundamental services. Mrs. Louisa Atta-Agyemang, NHIA Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Operations, highlighted the partnership's significance in extending healthcare access and fostering a more inclusive community.
Dr. Kenneth Agyeman Attafuah, Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority, stressed the Ghana card's role as a critical tool for identity verification and access to public services, particularly for children aged 6 to 14 years.
The joint registration drive will establish centers in schools nationwide to facilitate the process, encouraging active participation from parents and guardians. Authorities urge them to ensure their children obtain the Ghana card, securing their pathway to essential healthcare services.
This initiative marks a progressive step towards comprehensive healthcare coverage and national identification for Ghana’s youth. It reflects the government's dedication to fostering an inclusive and empowered society, ensuring every child’s rights and recognition are safeguarded.
