NIC Assists National Blood Service with 5,019 Units of Blood in Three Years to Preserve Lives

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) was recognized as the top performer in the corporate blood donor category of the National Blood Service (NBS) in Ghana. Over the past three years, the insurance sector, spearheaded by NIC, has actively participated in blood donation campaigns, contributing a total of 5,019 units of blood to support the NBS.
Mr. Michael Kofi Andoh, the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, received the award at the 20th World Blood Donor Day event held on June 14, 2024. This acknowledgment reflects the valuable contributions made by the NBS, along with individual and corporate voluntary blood donors, in ensuring the availability of safe blood for patients during emergencies.
The insurance industry has consistently led the corporate category in blood donations since the inception of the campaign three years ago, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. Their efforts are focused on saving the lives of pregnant women during childbirth, children battling cancer, and victims of accidents.
In a media interview, Mr. Michael Kofi Andoh reiterated the Insurance Industry's commitment to supporting blood supply initiatives while expressing gratitude to organizations and individuals for their active participation in the annual blood donation drives.
“I've realized that sometimes, a pint of blood is all it takes for someone to transition from death to life. I am deeply humbled, and I am pleased with our collective efforts. I hope that in the future, when we reach out to donors, they will continue to respond.”
Mr. Andoh conveyed his appreciation for receiving the award on behalf of the entire Insurance Industry and the generous Ghanaians who generously donated their blood. He urged them to sustain their support and emphasized the critical role of blood donation in saving lives.
NIC launched a nationwide blood donation campaign in August 2021 to bolster the supply of blood in the country's various blood banks.
World Blood Donor Day, observed annually on June 14 as designated by the World Health Organization (WHO), celebrates the altruistic acts of blood donation by individuals and corporate entities in preserving lives.
