Nurse Advises Against Using Palm Oil for Poisoning First Aid

Grace Quarm, a registered nurse at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has advised against using palm oil as a first aid remedy for poisoning. She emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical help instead.
Quarm addressed the common belief among some Ghanaians that palm oil can neutralize poisons, cautioning that this practice can actually exacerbate the situation. Speaking on Adom TV on July 27, 2024, she highlighted the dangers, particularly for children.
“If children ingest palm oil and then vomit, there is a risk of the oil entering their lungs, which can cause severe breathing difficulties,” she explained. “We have encountered cases at Korle-Bu where children faced respiratory issues after vomiting palm oil. Seeking prompt medical attention is crucial.”
Quarm also discussed the widespread practice of force-feeding children in many African countries, including Ghana. She urged caregivers to adopt safer feeding methods to prevent choking hazards.
“I advise against force-feeding babies and toddlers. This practice should be discontinued to ensure feeding times are safe and pleasant. Additionally, do not put babies to sleep immediately after feeding, as they can vomit and choke. Wait 10 to 15 minutes and lay them on their sides rather than their backs to reduce the risk of vomiting,” she added.
