Over 17,000 New HIV Infections Recorded in 2022 - Ghana AIDS Commission
The Ghana AIDS Commission reported seventeen thousand, seven hundred and seventy-four (17,774) new HIV infections in the country in 2023. This figure reflects a 14.8% decrease in HIV infection over the past decade. Additionally, 12,480 individuals living with the infection died, with 11.2% of this number being children.
Regions with the highest prevalence of HIV include Bono, Greater Accra, and Eastern Region. Dr. Kyeremeh, the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, expressed concerns regarding the high number of infections among economically active individuals aged 15 to 49.
The dissemination of the 2023 National and Sub-National HIV Estimates and Projections in Accra highlighted that approximately fifty people are infected with HIV every day, and more than 218,000 infected individuals are unaware of their status. Presently, more than 152,000 people are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), comprising 36,000 male adults, 109,000 female adults, and 5,000 children. Moreover, over 87,000 individuals on medication achieved viral suppression in 2023.
The Ghana AIDS Commission and its partners are committed to achieving an epidemic-free country by 2030.
