Plastics And Burns Centre Saves Man From Suicide

According to a story published officially by Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, a 36-year old man, Mr. Yao Asentem (not his real name), a painter by profession and a native of Cape Coast in the Central Region sustained a superficial partial thickness burns caused by electrocution at the Dome Kwabenya market.
He was painting a shop when his metal tool touched a wire and he fell off over a 1.6m height and was rushed to the Ga East Municipal Hospital, Dome Kwabenya.
Mr. Yao Asentem was later referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, having sustained severe burns in both lower and upper limbs, burn ulcers of his private parts with a brief loss of consciousness.
He was first received at the Accident and Emergency Centre and immediately transferred to the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre (RPSBC) where a team of surgeons, nurses, pharmacist and a psychologist managed to treat him and save his life.
Mr. Yao Asentem was discharged from the Centre early last year, with his right upper limb and lower limbs being amputated, and referred to the Nsawam Orthopaedic Centre for physiotherapy treatment.
The team of professionals at the RPSBC succeeded in counselling Mr. Yao Asentem to change his initial plan of committing suicide due to the loss of his lower limbs, his right hand and loss of private parts, as a result of his accident.
The Centre reconstructed an artificial private part to enable him urinate and he was also trained to do things on his own such as writing, eating and bathing with his left hand.
Through counselling, Mr. Yao Asentem has become an ambassador to people in similar situations who are losing hope.
On interaction with staff from the Public Relations Unit, Mr. Yao Asentem expressed his gratitude to the medical team at the Burns Centre for saving his life.
He, however, called for financial support from individual philanthropists to start a trade since his current condition does not allow him to do any hard physical work.
