Quality First: KBTH Central Laboratory Passes Key International Accreditation Review

Accra, Ghana – Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has taken a significant step toward enhancing the quality of its healthcare services, following a successful Quality Management System (QMS) assessment of its Laboratory Sub-BMC. The evaluation, conducted by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), is part of the hospital’s efforts to obtain ISO 15189:2022 accreditation, a globally recognized standard for medical laboratories.
The assessment covered key areas including Haematology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Immunology, Client Services, Laboratory Administration, and Storage. Dr. Philip Cotter, the lead assessor, conducted a detailed review of the department’s documentation, sample management, and technical procedures.
During a courtesy visit to the Acting Chief Executive Officer of KBTH, Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, Dr. Cotter commended the laboratory’s commitment to quality, noting that its management systems meet international standards. Dr. Owusu-Sekyere reaffirmed the hospital’s dedication to improving healthcare delivery, stating that the successful assessment is a crucial milestone in KBTH’s continuous quality improvement journey.
With this achievement, the hospital is advancing towards full accreditation, ensuring that patients receive accurate and reliable laboratory results—an essential aspect of effective diagnosis and treatment.
