The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has met with a delegation from the Italian Government to strengthen ongoing collaboration on the retooling of 37 public hospitals across Ghana. The meeting, held in Accra, focused on finalizing a concessional loan agreement to support the implementation of the project, which was initiated in 2021. The retooling initiative aims to significantly enhance the quality of healthcare delivery by equipping selected hospitals with modern medical equipment, replacing obsolete tools, and reducing patient mortality rates across the country.
During the meeting, the Minister outlined the government's broader priorities in the health sector, which include the construction of six new regional hospitals, the upgrading of existing regional facilities, and the establishment of a 500-bed Children’s and Fertility Center of Excellence. The Italian delegation, led by Mr. Stefano Gatti, confirmed that the project’s concept notes, pre-feasibility, and feasibility studies have been completed and approved by Ghana’s Ministry of Finance. This marks a significant step toward the execution of the project.
Hon. Akandoh expressed optimism that the project will soon transition into its implementation phase, ensuring that beneficiary hospitals receive the critical equipment needed to improve service delivery and meet the clinical needs of the population. The retooling project reflects the Government of Ghana’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system through international cooperation and targeted infrastructure investment.
