The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), a key referral center for five regions in northern Ghana, is currently facing a disruption in its oxygen supply due to a technical malfunction.

On Monday, July 1, 2024, the hospital’s oxygen plant experienced a shutdown following damage to its engine, significantly reducing the facility’s oxygen availability.

Public Relations Officer Mr. Zuberu Alidu reported that a team of technical experts is working to fix the issue, though no specific timeline for resolution has been provided.

Mr. Alidu reassured the public that the situation is manageable and there is no need for panic. He stated, “A crucial component of the oxygen plant was damaged, preventing the plant from producing and supplying oxygen. We are coordinating with suppliers, mainly in Kumasi, as our local suppliers in the Northern region are currently unable to meet our needs.”

He added, “At present, we have sufficient oxygen. Additionally, we are in contact with referring facilities, particularly with the Ghana Health Service, to ensure we can handle incoming referrals.”

A medical doctor, speaking anonymously to Channel One TV, disclosed that the hospital has deployed oxygen concentrators to help alleviate the shortage. The staff remain hopeful that the problem will be addressed promptly.
