The Vector Control Department of Zoomlion Ghana Limited has announced that the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) will focus on twelve municipalities and districts within the Volta and Oti Regions to eradicate malaria. This initiative marks significant progress as Ghana transitions from controlling to eliminating malaria, as noted by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Isaac Ablormeti, Vector Control Director for Zoomlion in the Volta and Oti Regions, informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the NMEP, Zoomlion, and the Ghana Health Service are collaborating to implement strategies aimed at reducing malaria cases in areas with high incidence rates.

Ablormeti explained that Zoomlion has introduced Larval Source Management, which entails monthly disinfection of mosquito breeding sites to prevent the insects from maturing beyond their early stages.

The targeted Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Volta Region include Keta, Ketu-North, Ketu-South, Ho, Hohoe, Anloga, Ho West, and South Tongu. In the Oti Region, the focus will be on Kadjebi, Nkwanta South, Krachi West, and Krachi East Districts, where concerted efforts are being made to eliminate malaria.

Ablormeti called on these MMDAs to continue supporting the efforts of Zoomlion, NMEP, the Ghana Health Service, and other partners in the fight against malaria.

The Ghana Health Service has reported a significant improvement in malaria testing rates, from 38% in 2012 to 98% in 2023. Additionally, malaria prevalence has dropped from 27.5% in 2011 to 8.6% in 2022, with malaria-related deaths decreasing from 2,799 in 2012 to 146 in 2023.
