WEST AFRICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS ACCREDITATION TEAM VISITS KORLE BU TEACHING HOSPITAL TOWARDS IMPROVED SERVICE DELIVERY

Accra, Ghana – April 2025
A delegation from the West African College of Surgeons has completed a re-accreditation visit to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), offering critical recommendations to enhance service delivery and reinforce the hospital’s role as a centre of excellence in surgical training and healthcare delivery.
The seven-member team, led by Professor Venyir Ramil, assessed various departments and centres to evaluate the hospital’s readiness for continued postgraduate training accreditation. The visit commenced at the Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence, where the team was warmly welcomed by Professor J.E. Mensah, Head of Department. The delegation toured key clinical and support units, including the Accident & Emergency Centre, Radiology Department, National Cardiothoracic Centre, National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre, Paediatric Unit, Neurosurgery Unit, Breast Unit, and major operating theatres.
Throughout the visit, the team engaged healthcare professionals across departments in comprehensive interviews, gathering insights into their experiences, documentation practices, patient care standards, and perceptions of operational strengths and challenges. A critical component of the assessment involved an in-depth review of patient records to evaluate documentation accuracy, adherence to treatment protocols, and enforcement of patient safety guidelines. Focus areas also included infection prevention and control, emergency response systems, and medication safety practices.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of KBTH, Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, stressed the importance of the exercise in upholding the hospital’s academic and clinical mission. “Re-accreditation by the West African College of Surgeons is vital for our continued growth as a teaching hospital. The feedback we receive during these visits helps us raise standards, improve patient outcomes, and maintain our position as a regional leader in specialist training,” — Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere
At the conclusion of the visit, the team held a debriefing session with the hospital’s central management team. They expressed general satisfaction with the services and infrastructure observed and provided strategic recommendations to guide quality improvement efforts.
This visit by the West African College of Surgeons represents a significant step in Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality, and patient-centred surgical care, while maintaining its prestigious status in postgraduate medical education within the West African sub-region
