The World Health Organization (WHO) has initiated an urgent appeal for $1.5 billion to safeguard the well-being of vulnerable populations across 41 global emergencies in 2024. This call to action addresses crises stemming from conflict, climate change, and economic instability, contributing to displacement, hunger, and inequality. WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasizes the critical role of health care in saving lives, particularly for those enduring emergencies. The appeal targets over 87 million people, focusing on delivering life-saving health care, distributing essential supplies, and maintaining crucial services. Funding will support communities in hard-to-reach areas, strengthen partnerships with local organizations, and enhance response capabilities to monitor outbreaks and protect health workers. Additionally, the appeal underscores the positive impact of funding, highlighting that every $1 invested in WHO yields a return on investment of at least $35. The proposed allocations for 2024 include $334 million for the African Region, $705 million for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, $183 million for the European region, $15.2 million for the Western Pacific Region, $49 million for the South-East Asia Region, and $131 million for the Americas Region. Dr Tedros expresses gratitude for the support in 2023 and emphasizes the continued need for international solidarity to address health threats and assist vulnerable communities in 2024.
