In a global health alert, the World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep concern over the widespread availability and aggressive marketing of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS). These devices, commonly known as e-cigarettes, heat liquids to produce aerosols, with or without nicotine, posing potential health risks due to additives and harmful chemicals.

Highlighting a lack of regulations in 74 countries and no minimum age requirements in 88 countries for purchasing e-cigarettes, WHO emphasizes the urgent need for tighter controls. The organization warns that e-cigarettes, including e-cigars and e-pipes, are being heavily promoted to young people through social media and influencers, featuring over 16,000 enticing flavors.

WHO’s apprehension extends to the marketing strategies employed, with some products adopting appealing designs, cartoon characters, and toy-like appearances, raising concerns about their impact on the younger generation. Disturbingly, the use of e-cigarettes among children and young individuals has seen a sharp rise, surpassing adult usage rates in several nations.

Even a brief exposure to e-cigarette content on social media has been linked to increased intentions to use these products and more positive attitudes toward them. WHO calls for immediate action to curb the alarming trend, advocating for stricter regulations, heightened awareness, and a collective effort to protect the well-being of young people worldwide.
