As the world marks World Diabetes Day today, on November 14th, the Islamic Medical Association of Ghana (IMAGH) More which is the Mouthpiece of all Muslim Health Professionals in Ghana joins the global community in raising awareness about this growing health concern.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels, which can lead to serious complications if left untreated.

According to the Lancet, over 1 billion people could be living with diabetes by 2050 worldwide. This rise in diabetes cases is attributed to a combination of factors, including unhealthy lifestyle choices, urbanization, and genetic predisposition.

Reducing Sugar Consumption: A Key Step in Diabetes Prevention. One of the most significant risk factors for developing diabetes is excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). SSBs, such as sodas, juices, and energy drinks, packed with added sugars that can quickly raise blood sugar levels and increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Call to Action: Islamic Medical Association of Ghana ( IMAGH ) strongly urges all Ghanaians to take the following actions to prevent diabetes.

* Reduce intake of SSB: take more water, fruits and vegetables or natural sweeteners like honey.

* Get tested for diabetes: Early detection and diagnosis are essential for effective diabetes management.

* Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight is a major risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.

* Adopt a healthy diet: Limit your intake of sugary drinks, processed foods, and unhealthy fats. Choose whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein instead.

* Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.

* Quit smoking: Smoking increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and its complications.

* Manage stress: Chronic stress can raise blood sugar levels and increase your risk of developing diabetes.

* Get regular checkups: Regular checkups with your doctor can help you monitor your blood sugar levels and identify any early signs of diabetes.

However, If you have been diagnosed of diabetes follow strictly the medical advice to prevent worsening.
