WHO Member States have unanimously agreed to resume negotiations with the aim of finalizing the world’s first pandemic agreement. Following two weeks of intensive discussions, government negotiators have tackled critical topics such as financing for pandemic preparedness, equitable access to medical countermeasures, and health workforce strengthening. The resumption of negotiations, scheduled for April 29 to May 10, marks a pivotal step towards achieving consensus ahead of the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly in May 2024. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, expressed gratitude for Member States’ commitment to this historic endeavor, emphasizing its significance in safeguarding future generations from the hardships endured during the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-Chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB), Dr. Precious Matsoso and Mr. Roland Driece, underscored the imperative of reaching a consensus, highlighting the agreement’s role in enhancing global pandemic preparedness, response, and equity. Established in December 2021, the INB process has involved extensive participation from various stakeholders, underscoring a collective effort towards building a healthier, fairer, and safer world from future pandemics.
